Senior Systems Engineer - HiveOS
Senior Systems Engineer – HiveOS
Do you enjoy owning critical systems and solving the hard integration problems? Are you excited to ship quickly and deliver software that runs on real devices?
PassiveLogic is the first fully autonomous platform for buildings. We’ve reinvented the fundamental principles of automation to democratize technology, optimize buildings, and reduce the world’s carbon footprint. We are a team of technologists, engineers, and creatives dedicated to making a sustainable impact through real-world solutions.
We are looking for team members who have a passion for technology and want to work on cutting-edge problems with real-world solutions. Our culture is built on bringing together the most talented engineers, thinkers, and creatives—backed by the world’s leading investors—working together to make the future a reality.
About the Role
This is a career-defining opportunity to play a crucial role in a hyper-scale AI company that is transforming the future of autonomous systems, energy, and the built environment.
This role owns the architecture and evolution of HiveOS, our embedded Linux runtime environment. You will define and improve the service model, upgrade semantics, observability surface, and security boundaries of the runtime while ensuring clean, well-defined integration contracts with the broader platform. This is a hands-on systems role focused on building durable runtime foundations.
What you’ll do
Own HiveOS runtime architecture:
Define and evolve the service model, container/runtime structure, environment configuration system, and upgrade semantics for HiveOS and HiveMiniOS. Ensure the runtime remains coherent, durable, and maintainable as the platform evolves.
Improve OTA and release workflows: Architect and implement reliable firmware update mechanisms, versioning strategy, rollback safety, and release compatibility for deployed systems.
Support observability and telemetry: Coordinate telemetry metrics, traces, and logs shipped from devices, and tune what is collected and exported based on real-world bandwidth constraints.
Turn field issues into structural improvements: Investigate complex runtime failures and convert recurring integration problems into architectural simplifications or contract clarifications.
What you’ll bring
If your experience does not meet all our posted requirements below, we’d still love to hear from you. We are looking for practitioners who are passionate about understanding people, committed to lifelong learning, and driven by the love of what they do. If that’s you, please apply!
You must have
Proven experience: Experience with Linux, systemd, and containers.
Exceptional communication skills: Ability to define and document system contracts clearly and communicate technical boundaries across teams.
Organized and strategic: Ability to identify recurring runtime and integration failures and evolve architectural boundaries to prevent them.
Collaborative mindset: Ability to work across teams to define clear runtime boundaries and integration contracts.
Adaptability: Comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment, eager to learn, iterate, and innovate.
Problem solving: You own this role. When issues arise, be the empowered force that solves them, rolling-up.
You should have
Attention to detail: Demonstrate strong attention to detail in your work. Be willing to dig into the nuances, talk through tradeoffs, and deliver high-quality results.
Experience writing and reviewing C code
Experience with container technology and how to secure it
It’s helpful to have
Experience writing and reviewing Swift code
Willingness to learn new languages deeply, including understanding design decisions, tradeoffs, and common pitfalls
We know there are candidates who might not fit everything we’ve described above, or who might have experience and skills we haven’t considered. PassiveLogic can sometimes be flexible enough to shift responsibilities to the right person, or otherwise identify open or upcoming roles that may better fit your professional background. Even if you don’t meet all the requirements above, we still want to hear from you.
