Autonomous Systems Software Engineer
Would you like to be a part of PassiveLogic’s mission to “empower people through generative autonomy to solve the world's largest climate challenges"?
What you will be doing
We’re looking for an Autonomous Systems Software Engineer who is energized and driven by PassiveLogic’s mission. You will be joining our team at an exciting time in our product deployment journey. We’re doing initial installations of our industry-disrupting Hive Controller in building sites to test how far we can go with our ground-breaking AI capabilities.
The Hive Controller combines PassiveLogic's autonomous building platform technology with state-of-the-art wireless sensors, intelligent I/O, and a user interface — all in a simple plug & play appliance that runs at the edge. It acts as a scalable, distributed compute and data storage system for customers throughout the Building Automation industry. Learn more about the Hive here.
Responsibilities:
- Work with a team to advance the Hive Controller’s autonomous abilities by executing on an existing roadmap of architectural structure, modules, and features
- Develop robust autonomous software that must run with no human supervision for decades. Use thoughtful architecture design, unit testing, integration testing, profiling, and collaboration with the Formal Methods team to ensure this robustness
- Projects you may contribute to:
- AI Solver Infrastructure - developing the infrastructure that makes it easy to do automated physics inference, optimization, learning, etc.
- Control Pathfinding - realtime autonomous decision making at the edge, using differentiable physics simulation inference, automated reasoning, state estimation, optimization, and machine learning
- Autonomous Learning - updating physics models based on empirical observations, probabilistic event modeling, fault detection, quantifying the quality of empirical/prediction data, attributing error causes, etc. Generally, improving system performance as it gathers experience
- Weather Prediction - forecasting, with contexts ranging from having an internet connection with forecast API access, to no internet connection and only using locally observable information to forecast weather
- Create documentation, and refine, extend, and maintain existing documentation that articulates our vision for a module, its existing implementation status, and planned stages of effort
- Incorporate behavioral feedback from our deployed systems to refine the Hive Controller
About PassiveLogic
PassiveLogic is disrupting the world of automation with the first generalized platform for autonomy. Our first application for autonomy is buildings — the largest and most complex controlled infrastructure in the economy. Our culture is built on bringing together the most talented engineers, thinkers, and creatives — backed by the world’s leading investors — working collaboratively together to build the future we envision.
PassiveLogic’s infinitely configurable platform enables users to design their own custom autonomous systems. We've reinvented the fundamental principles of automation to replace legacy control logic with real-time control decisions at the edge, reducing the world’s carbon footprint, while paving the way for the future of smart cities. We are looking for team members who have a passion for technology and want to work on real-world solutions to some of the toughest problems.
You must have
- Strong self-motivation towards PassiveLogic’s mission to “empower people through generative autonomy to solve the world's largest climate challenges.”
- Strong proficiency in systems programming languages such as C++, Swift, Rust, or Java
- 3+ years of software engineering experience required, though 5+ years preferred, working with large codebases with non-trivial architecture, beyond just coding small (1000’s of lines) programs and scripts
- Experience in multiple software paradigms, including data-driven, OOP, functional, and protocol-oriented software design
- Appreciation of the importance of good architecture for the success of large software engineering projects and an interest in developing your architectural thinking
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with a strong analytical mindset and attention to detail
- Extraordinary teammate with excellent interpersonal skills
- Openness to participate in and guide a feedback-based work process to drive improvements and growth
You should have
- Solid understanding of machine learning algorithms and infrastructure, optimization, and control systems
It’s helpful to have
- BS, MS, or PhD in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or other Engineering degrees
- Experience working in a startup
- Knowledge of Linux
- Swift language development experience
- Experience in deploying autonomous systems
Compensation, Perks, & Benefits:
- Competitive compensation
- Equity share
- Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, FSA, HSA, Disability, and Term Life Insurance
- Annual PTO front loaded on Day 1 (no accruals!)
- Well stocked break room snacks and catered lunch Monday through Friday
- Free ski passes (We are at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon)
- Free National Park passes
- We push our performance personally as well as professionally, and we do respect flexible hours around well earned powder days
To apply for this position please send:
- A cover letter telling us why you're the perfect candidate for PassiveLogic
- A resume
- Extra mile — include a description of a project (of any type) you personally created, devised, built, managed, organized, or designed that was of your own self-initiative
We are looking for practitioners who are passionate about understanding people, committed to lifelong learning, and driven by the love of what they do. We know there are candidates who might not fit everything we’ve described above, or who might have experience and skills we haven’t considered. If that’s you, please apply.
